The first day of school at St. Sava Academy, the parochial school of Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago, was celebrated with a cherished tradition. Students, staff, and classrooms were blessed with holy water, setting a spiritual foundation for the academic year. This ceremony, led by the clergy, emphasized the essential role of faith, education, and community as the Academy welcomed back its students for another year of learning and growth.
Two decades ago, St. Sava Academy began with just a handful of students—barely a dozen—attending its classes. This modest beginning reflected the determined efforts of our community to create a place where our children could receive a quality education rooted in Orthodox Christian values and Serbian cultural heritage.
Today, the Academy’s enrollment is approaching 200 students, a remarkable testament to the unwavering commitment of the founders, clergy, educators, parents, and community members who have tirelessly supported and nurtured this institution. The Academy’s growth and success stand as a significant achievement for our community, proving that a steadfast dedication to educating our children yields profound and lasting benefits.
Metropolitan Longin has often highlighted the importance of St. Sava Academy, noting that the school is “crucial for the formation of identity, preservation of faith and culture, and for future generations.” This blessing of the classrooms and students not only sanctifies the space but also serves as a reminder of the Academy’s mission: to nurture the minds and spirits of young people, preparing them for a life of faith, learning, and service.
As we celebrate the beginning of this school year, we also celebrate the achievements of St. Sava Academy—a beacon of education and faith that continues to thrive and grow, enriching the lives of our children and strengthening our community for generations to come.
We extend our heartfelt wishes to the principal and staff of St. Sava Academy for a prosperous year ahead. May this academic year be filled with growth, success, and joy as they continue their vital work of guiding and inspiring our students. Their dedication and passion are the foundation upon which our children’s futures are built, and we are profoundly grateful for their unwavering commitment to excellence in education.
