The Cathedral community gathered in a radiant display of faith and tradition recently to celebrate the Slava of SSS Branko Radichevich, honoring their patron, St. George the Great Martyr. More than just a joyful gathering, the day served as a powerful reminder of the choir’s vital role as a cornerstone of liturgical life and a living bridge between generations within our Diocese.
The Ministry of Sacred Song
At the heart of Orthodox worship, the choir serves a sacred ministry. Through the beauty of their voices, they “clothe” the Divine Liturgy in melody, helping the faithful transcend the mundane and enter into a deeper state of prayer. This year’s Slava began with a moving Divine Liturgy, where the choir’s harmonies soared through the nave and truly beautified the service.
Choir Director Jelena Stojakovic noted the deepening spiritual commitment and growth of the ensemble.
“We are witnessing a beautiful growth in our liturgical participation,” Jelena shared. “The choir is fully immersing itself in the responses and the flow of the services by truly leading the faithful in worship. Furthermore, the growth of our Children’s Choir is essential. They are the heart of our future, and they ensure that the beauty of our choral tradition continues to flourish in the years to come.”
A Legacy of Remembrance and Service
In a poignant moment of reflection, the names of deceased choir members and supporters were read aloud. This prayerful remembrance connected the current ensemble with the generations who paved the way before them. Following the Liturgy, the community joined in the traditional blessing of the Slava Kolac and Zito.
The spirit of service was personified by this year’s Kumovi, the Anastasov family—Slavco, Gordana, Kiril, and Arsen. As longtime singers, their commitment exemplifies the dedication required of a cathedral chorister. In that same spirit, Jana and Olga Popovic served as Kumovi for the Jr. Brankies, representing the vital role our youth play in the ongoing life of the church.
Choir President Denise Trylovich, newly elected this year, welcomed guests with great warmth. With family roots in the choir stretching back nearly 95 years, Denise embodies the continuity that keeps our Diocesan traditions vibrant.
Fellowship and Choral Joy
The celebration transitioned from the altar to the banquet hall for a festive luncheon characterized by several special highlights:
- Vocal Artistry: Stirring performances showcased the technical skill and spiritual passion of the singers.
- The Gift of Hospitality: A lavish spread of desserts was provided by choir members and parents of the Jr. Brankies. This included a stunning torte by Ivana Popovic featuring music and a photograph of the choir.
- Musical Celebration: The Radovic family, who are all dedicated members of the choir, provided the music entertainment after lunch. They carried the joyful spirit of the Slava into the afternoon.
120 Years of Harmony
As we look toward November 2026, the choir is already buzzing with preparation for its landmark 120th Anniversary. For over a century, SSS Branko Radichevich has been a “voice” of our Diocese by offering a sacrifice of praise that resonates through the ages.
We are profoundly grateful for their talent, their discipline, and their unwavering devotion. Their singing is not just music. It is an offering that lifts our entire community toward the heavens.
Ziveli and many years to SSS Branko Radichevich!
