The St. Sava Academy Summer Day Camp is off to an inspiring start! Following a successful first week with 25 enthusiastic campers, the second week has welcomed over 40 children—a remarkable increase that reflects growing interest and strong word-of-mouth among families.
Many parents, delighted with the camp experience, chose to extend their children’s participation beyond the first week. They’ve shared how meaningful, joyful, and beneficial the program has been—offering a rare combination of faith, friendship, and fun.
Leadership & Volunteers
The camp is led by Uroš Kalicanin, Camp Director and teacher at St. Sava Academy, with support from fellow Academy teacher Marina Stojmenović. Joining the team this week is Stefan Dmitrović, a graduate of St. Sava Seminary in Libertyville, IL, bringing additional spiritual guidance and mentorship to the program.
Teen volunteers Aleksija and Miroslav Nenadović are also making a strong impact, offering their time and energy to assist younger campers and help guide daily activities.
What Makes This Camp Special
Held on the grounds of St. Sava Academy, the camp is a collaborative effort of the Academy and Holy Resurrection Serbian Orthodox Cathedral. It runs Monday through Friday, from 8:15 AM to 3:15 PM, through August 1.
Some highlights and key features of the camp include:
- Spiritual Development: Daily prayers, church visits, and faith lessons help children grow in their Orthodox Christian identity.
- Serbian Language & Culture: Language reinforcement and cultural activities ensure children stay connected to their heritage.
- Physical Activity: Most of the day is spent outdoors, with kids walking an average of 25,000 steps—staying active and healthy.
- Professional Staff: Led by trained educators and clergy, the camp maintains a safe, nurturing environment.
- Excursions & Field Trips: Visits to monasteries, farms, and water parks give children hands-on experiences and joyful memories.
Looking Ahead: Growth & Year-Round Opportunities
With the recent acquisition of a new property—the former St. Paul Lutheran School building—St. Sava Academy is now in a position to significantly expand its Summer Camp programming, with the goal of hosting a full summer schedule in future years. Even more, the Academy aims to become a platform for extracurricular activities and afterschool programs that will operate throughout the entire academic year. These offerings will be open to all interested children, regardless of whether they are enrolled at the Academy—demonstrating the school’s commitment to nurturing faith, culture, and community beyond the classroom.
